INDIA SIGNS SUBMARINE UPGRADE WITH THYSSENKRUPP

The Indian Navy (IN) signed an INR2.6 billion (USD38.4 million) contract on 29 June with Germany's ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems to upgrade two of its four Shishumar-class (Type 209/1500) diesel-electric attack submarines (SSK).

The company said in a statement that the upgrade, which includes arming the two boats with Boeing anti-ship UGM-84L Harpoon Block II encapsulated missile systems, would be undertaken at the Naval Dockyard Mumbai. It would also be backed by a training package to support and operate the weapon system, it added.

IN officials told IHS Jane's that the major refit and life certification (MRLC) for INSShalki and INS Shankul - licence-built at Mumbai's Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) and commissioned in 1992 and 1994 - is aimed at extending their operational life by 10 years.
