A new World Bank report has recommended that Pacific Island countries supporting or considering deep sea mining activities proceed with a high degree of caution to avoid irreversible damage to the ecosystem, and ensure that appropriate social and environmental safeguards are in place as part of strong governance arrangements for this emerging industry.
Namibia is yet to decide whether it will lift the moratorium on phosphate mining. Last week, minister of mines and energy Obeth Kandjoze told a meeting of the Chamber of Mines of Namibia that the matter was still a ‘work in progress’, and that the Cabinet committee dealing with the matter met on 15 February and is expected to make a recommendation to Cabinet for a decision.
