TATA STEEL AND THYSSENKRUPP IN TALKS TO MERGER STEEL BUSINESSES, SAYS NEWSPAPER

Tata Steel and German engineering giant Thyssenkrupp are said to be in discussions to combine their continental European steel businesses, according to German newspaper Rheinsche Post.

The report comes two days after the Indian company said that it plans to sell its loss-making UK operations.

The potential divestment of the UK business, analysts said, could make way for a possible merger between Tata Steel's Netherlands unit, which has a capacity of seven million tonnes, and Thyssenkrupp's steel operations in Duisburg, Germany, which has a capacity of 15 million tonnes.
