US raw steel production increased 1.7% last week with a 4.3% uptick in Southern steel mill output, American Iron and Steel Institute data released Monday showed.
In the week ended Saturday, US mill produced 1.685 million st of steel, up 1.7% from the 1.657 million st made in the prior week.
The industry's capability utilization rate went up to 71.9% from 70.7% the week before.
Last week's output was 1.2% lower than the 1.705 million st made in the same week last year, when mills were operating at 72.4% of capability. Year-to-date steel production is down 9.6%.
