RENZI SIGNS PROTOCOL FOR THE CLEAN-UP A HUGE FORMER STEEL PLANT IN NAPLES

Premier Matteo Renzi on Tuesday signed the protocol for the vigilance of the procedures for the clean-up and revamp of the area of a huge former steel plant in the Bagnoli district of Naples.

Naples Mayor Luigi de Magistris's has accused central government of "expropriating" his role with the project. "If those who should do things, starting with some local bodies, do not do them, it's up to us to act, with the (site) commissioner, with the most advanced procedures on the transparency front," Renzi said, adding that the protocol was being signed at the premier's office and not in Naples to "avoid controversy".

"The time for chatter is over. If Bagnoli gets going again, Naples, southern Italy and all of Italy will get going again.

"Bagnoli will be cleaned up and made healthy again. We owe this to the women and women of Naples and Italy". The multi-billion-euro plan includes a revamped science park.
