US Steel Corp is restructuring its flat rolled operations in Kosice, Slovakia, amid a steel market downturn, a company spokesman confirmed.
The spokesman declined to confirm or deny local media reports that US Steel Kosice (USSK), a subsidiary of US Steel, might be for sale.
"The adjustment of the company's flat rolled operations is a result of challenging market conditions that reflect the cyclical nature of the industry," USSK spokesman Ján Baca told Steel First sister publication AMM in a December 8 email.
Changes at Kosice mean an overhaul of US Steel's operations is occurring abroad as well as in the USA, where the steelmaker has announced a series of layoffs and plant idlings, most recently at its Granite City steel mill in Illinois.
