Hyundai Steel Co., Ltd, one of the largest steel manufacturers in the world, is keen to set up a steel plant in the Trinomalee harbour.
International Trade State Minister Sujeewa Senasinghe told Daily News Business that in addition automobile companies, Hyundai and Kia too are keen to set up car manufacturing plants in Trincomalee. "This is provided that Hyundai Steel Company, the oldest steel making company in Korea sets up a steel plant."
Hyundai Steel, in 2004, had purchased the facilities of the defunct Hanbo Steel in Dangjin. They have taken the once rundown steel company and has refurnished and revitalized its facilities to make it one of the most efficient steel plants in Korea. "They are looking to expand globally and it's now up to the government to engage with them more."
