Nucor will resume manufacturing at its steel plant in St. James Parish by the end of January amid improving market conditions, the company said Wednesday (Jan. 6).
The move comes only weeks after Nucor announced it would temporarily mothball the plant, casting uncertainty over its plans to build a larger US$ 3.4 billion manufacturing complex at the site.
Nucor, based in Charlotte, N.C., said in a news release changes in the cost of raw materials used at the Convent plant prompted the decision to reopen. The plant uses natural gas to produce iron ore pellets, which are blended with scrap metal to make steel.
